Ichirou in Netflix’s Akuma-kun Gives Off Death Note’s L Vibes

Death Note fans, you might like this series, too.

Summary:

  • Akuma-kun is a 2023 Netflix anime.
  • Fans thought Akuma-kun might be autistic-coded.
  • Akuma-kun reminds fans of Death Note’s L.

Akuma-kun is an anime series based on the manga of the same name written and illustrated by Shigeru Mizuki. All 12 episodes premiered on Netflix on November 9, 2023.

Ichirou Umoregi, also known as "Akuma-kun," is a genius boy who only appears once in 10,000 years. He has no idea who his real family is, but this is exactly what he’s trying to find out. And his partner Mephisto will help him with the search for his origins.

While the series received mixed reviews and a rather average score on MyAnimeList (6.81), it’s still a very enjoyable experience, mostly because of its main characters. Mephisto is undoubtedly great, but we’ll leave him for some other time, since fans are more interested in Akuma-kun and his personality.

Is He Autistic-Coded?

This is the question many fans seem to be asking. Akuma-kun’s quirky personality and antisocial behavior do make us think that he might have a neurodevelopmental disorder, and even though there’s no official confirmation, this seems like a very possible option.

On top of that, a number of autistic fans say that they see themselves in Akuma-kun and can share his thoughts, opinions and behaviors, which only makes them more confident: the character is autistic-coded.

“I must admit i see the old me in Akuma since i am autistic too,” says Redditor @Trick-Anteater-2679.

L Vibes

Due to his odd personality and high intelligence, Akuma-kun reminds fans of Death Note’s L. Both are geniuses, both are quiet, both have terrible social skills, and both work on mysterious cases, of course. It’s easy to think of L while watching Akuma-kun.

Although the art styles of Akuma-kun and Death Note are completely different, there are even similarities in the way L and Akuma-kun look. Both characters are pale and have eye bags. Although L has a lot more darkness under his eyes, there’s still something in their faces that makes us think they’re very alike.

There’s also something in the way these geniuses handle their cases. Akuma-kun may be very blunt and tactless to his clients because of his lack of social skills. L is softer and tries to be more polite to other people, but he knows the importance of being honest and straightforward when it comes to investigation.

L and Akuma-kun’s levels of intelligence are truly outstanding. Both are the smartest characters in their respective series (Light stans, don’t get offended, he’s also the smartest, it’s a tie).

All of this does make fans think of L when they’re watching Akuma-kun, and we have to admit that we also see the resemblance. No wonder fans loved Akuma-kun when he gives off the vibes of one of the best anime characters ever.
