It’s been years since the Black Butler (Kuroshitsuji) manga surprised its readers with the two Ciels plot twist, and yet we still don’t know a lot of details about these characters.
Two Is Better Than One
Turns out, the Ciel we all know so well and love so dearly is not actually the original Ciel, but his twin brother. To tell them apart, fans have come up with small markers: they use O!Ciel (our Ciel) and R!Ciel (the real Ciel).
R!Ciel was ritually sacrificed, while O!Ciel kept living and stole the identity of his twin brother. However, Undertaker brought R!Ciel back, and now the brothers oppose each other. Fans even think that R!Ciel might be the “final boss” of the series, someone O!Ciel has to defeat to reach his ending.
The most puzzling thing for the fandom, though, is that we still don’t know the true name of O!Ciel. It was revealed that it’s his brother’s name, but we haven’t got one for our main protagonist.
It makes all the Black Butler manga discussions a bit annoying, since fans are forced to use the O! and R! markers every time they speak about the brothers. So readers are naturally interested in learning the real name of “Ciel.”
Peculiar Fan Theory Floating Around the Web
Unfortunately, we don’t really know if his real name will ever be revealed or not. It would make a lot of sense, but we can’t be sure that it will happen. Still, fans have a curious theory about this reveal.
Black Butler has always been about the contract between Sebastian and O!Ciel among other things. His demon butler was the only one who knew he wasn’t really a Ciel, so he had to know his real name.
It seems natural to suggest that Black Butler might end with the contract being completed and Sebastian consuming O!Ciel’s soul. Fans think it would be awesome if Sebastian ends their contract and says O!Ciel’s real name at the end of the series.
The Name Is Too Iconic
If the name reveal happens only at the end of the series, it will give fans the desired answer but won’t ruin anything for them.
Everyone is used to addressing this character as “Ciel,” this name’s been around for years, so hardly anyone will be capable of thinking of O!Ciel as of a Richard or Paul, for example.
Ciel’s name is too iconic for the series, and fans aren’t ready for such a big change. Even if the reveal happens long before the finale of Black Butler arrives, it will hardly change anything, so there’s just no point in that.
