Attack on Titan’s Ymir Fritz’s Story, Explained

Attack on Titan’s Ymir Fritz’s Story, Explained

Why was she so important?

Attack on Titan spoilers ahead!

Summary:

  • Ymir was the first one to possess the Titan Shifter power.
  • She was the key figure in Eren’s plan to start the Rumbling.
  • Ymir was inspired by Mikasa, and that’s why the Titan curse was broken.

Founder Ymir was introduced long ago in Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin), but we didn’t have any details about her and her story for a long time. But Season 4 has got our backs, and we got an entire episode dedicated to the founder, which is, if we may add, one of the best Attack on Titan episodes ever.

Ymir’s story confused some of the anime onlys (and, to be fair, some of the manga readers back in the days, too), so let’s dive into this interesting character and explain what exactly happened at the end of Attack on Titan, and what role Ymir played in the finale.

The Titan curse started with Ymir

Ymir’s village was attacked and enslaved by Eldians when she was a little girl. Due to an accident with escaping pigs, she was tortured and hunted for sports by King Fritz and his men. That’s how the girl stumbled across a mysterious tree, where she found the power of titans and became the Founding Titan. After realizing the power Ymir held, the king decided to use the girl as his weapon. She served him right and annihilated his enemies. She also gave him three daughters, who later ate Ymir’s corpse in order to preserve the titan powers.

Even after her death, Ymir continued to serve her descendants, building more titans when needed. She was the key figure, which held the curse together and didn’t let it vanish.

Ymir is very important for the story

The girl was crucial for Eren’s plan to start the Rumbling. She was initially portrayed as a slave, capable of only listening to the ones with royal blood. But Eren was the first one to actually listen. He understood the girl and showed her that she could be free. That’s why Ymir let Eren start the Rumbling, even though he wasn’t of royal blood.

Attack on Titan ends with the Titan curse being broken, and some of the fans seemed confused by how that happened. The point is that Ymir wasn’t just a slave to King Fritz due to her sense of duty. She was actually in love with him. That’s why she tried to protect him, which resulted in her own death. That’s why she kept creating new titans, just like the king wanted.

Ymir saw herself in Mikasa. Just like Mikasa’s love for Eren didn’t allow her to realize that he had become a monster, Ymir’s love for Fritz didn’t allow her to stop serving the king. But when Mikasa managed to kill Eren, Ymir realized that it’s possible to move on, no matter how deep her feelings were. Mikasa’s sacrifice inspired Ymir, truly freed the founder, and stopped the Titan curse.
