5 Non-Shounen Anime to Watch if You Like Fullmetal Alchemist

There are more anime similar to FMA than you probably expected.

Did you like one of the versions of Fullmetal Alchemist — 2003 or Brotherhood — and want something similar? Well, of course, you could turn to other battle shounen series.

But, if you want something less battle-oriented and perhaps for other demographics (or without any target demographic at all), you can try one of these anime.

Baccano!

Just like Fullmetal Alchemist, Baccano! deals with alchemy — though it features a far more classic approach to it.

Regardless, both anime combine action, mystery, and politics — and both take some time to unravel the whole plot. In both series, you get to follow many characters at the same time, but they’re all a part of a larger story.

Golden Kamuy

If you want another action-adventure anime which has a large amount of comedy as well, Golden Kamuy might be a good recommendation. Like in Fullmetal Alchemist, the characters go on a journey to find something — and first, they have to find out what they actually need to do.

Slowly, the protagonists get entangled in a political conspiracy involving the military. While Golden Kamuy isn’t finished yet, the fifth season was already announced — and it’s supposed to adapt the remainder of the manga.

Eureka Seven

In Koukyoushihen Eureka Seven, we are introduced to a strange world with alternative physics. And, just like in FMA, we get to follow a protagonist who, by the end of the anime, will have to save the whole world — all while navigating complex political systems and other interpersonal relationships.

If you liked the animation in FMA, Eureka Seven is made by the same studio.

Fate/Zero

If you want a more unique take on the fantasy genre, as well as an interesting system of magic, you can try getting into the Fate franchise.

More specifically, a good point to start with would be Fate/Zero — which is darker in tone than many other Fate anime, but that darkness is somewhat similar to the darker arcs of FMA. Similarly to both FMA and the aforementioned anime, it also has a lot of great characters, all important to the story.

The Apothecary Diaries

You might be wondering how exactly The Apothecary Diaries (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto) is even similar to Fullmetal Alchemist in the first place. And yes, at first glance, the two have nothing in common, with The Apothecary Diaries hardly having any action. However, it’s more than just about that.

Both anime heavily feature smaller arcs with mystery elements: in FMA, they’re secondary, in Apothecary Diaries, they’re the main theme. These arcs slowly tie together later in the series, revealing a larger picture of a political conspiracy.
